Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 1.63%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.63%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were NRW Holdings Ltd (ASX:NWH), which rose 2.60% or 0.06 points to trade at 2.37 at the close. Meanwhile, Collins Foods Ltd (ASX:CKF) added 1.48% or 0.12 points to end at 8.24 and Brambles Ltd (ASX:BXB) was up 0.85% or 0.12 points to 14.18 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Gold Road Resources Ltd (ASX:GOR), which fell 8.31% or 0.15 points to trade at 1.60 at the close. Megaport Ltd (ASX:MP1) declined 8.21% or 0.64 points to end at 7.16 and Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG) was down 7.32% or 0.03 points to 0.38.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 855 to 420 and 469 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 4.21% to 12.54.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.26% or 5.05 to $1,939.85 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.23% or 0.17 to hit $72.36 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.26% or 0.20 to trade at $76.92 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 0.68, while AUD/JPY fell 0.20% to 96.25.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 101.63.
