Japan stocks higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 1.80%

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 added 1.80% to hit a new 5-year high.

The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Hitachi Zosen Corp. (TYO:7004), which rose 5.75% or 50.00 points to trade at 919.00 at the close. Meanwhile, SoftBank Group Corp. (TYO:9984) added 5.25% or 315.00 points to end at 6,310.00 and Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203) was up 5.05% or 104.50 points to 2,173.50 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (TYO:9532), which fell 2.35% or 54.00 points to trade at 2,240.00 at the close. Eisai Co., Ltd. (TYO:4523) declined 2.22% or 240.00 points to end at 10,555.00 and Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. (TYO:3863) was down 1.64% or 21.00 points to 1,257.00.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1957 to 1626 and 255 ended unchanged.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 4.82% to 20.55.

Crude oil for July delivery was up 0.83% or 0.56 to $67.68 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in August rose 1.14% or 0.82 to hit $72.66 a barrel, while the August Gold Futures contract rose 0.45% or 8.85 to trade at $1,978.55 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was down 0.08% to 139.50, while EUR/JPY rose 0.33% to 150.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.39% at 102.82.
