South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s performance of a classic Don McLean song was the dessert no one expected at Wednesday night’s state dinner at the White House.
Yoon serenaded the audience with a rendition of “American Pie,” after taking the microphone from President Joe Biden, to enthusiastic applause from the audience and from the U.S. president. The tune was a favorite of Yoon’s in his school days, his interpreter revealed. And his singing prompted Biden to say he he “no damn idea” about his Korean counterpart’s musical abilities.
