Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.04%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.04%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Codan Ltd (ASX:CDA), which rose 5.54% or 0.36 points to trade at 6.86 at the close. Meanwhile, Virgin Money PLC (ASX:VUK) added 5.30% or 0.15 points to end at 2.98 and G8 Education Ltd (ASX:GEM) was up 4.98% or 0.06 points to 1.26 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were EML Payments Ltd (ASX:EML), which fell 9.20% or 0.08 points to trade at 0.74 at the close. Mineral Resources Ltd (ASX:MIN) declined 5.46% or 4.60 points to end at 79.71 and Pilbara Minerals Ltd (ASX:PLS) was down 4.89% or 0.20 points to 3.89.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 671 to 592 and 422 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 1.84% to 12.73.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.03% or 0.65 to $2,007.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.69% or 1.34 to hit $77.90 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 1.61% or 1.34 to trade at $81.78 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.04% to 0.67, while AUD/JPY fell 0.12% to 90.29.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 101.68.
