Elon Musk’s comments in this week’s Tesla earnings call have resurrected the debate over whether Wall Street’s “short-termism” is having negative effects on the stock market in particular and the economy in general.

Specifically, Musk said he most likely would not be on future earnings calls “unless there’s something important I need to say.” His comments echo a tweet he made three years ago in which he threatened to take Tesla TSLA private to avoid Wall Street’s obsession with short-term results.
