Tired of feeling hot and sweaty when you sleep? It may be time to change your sheets. “Sheets that contain breathable materials such as linen, cotton, bamboo and percale cotton are the best bed sheets for cooler sleep as they can keep most people cool, comfortable and dry,” advises NYC-based internist Dr. Niket Sonpal, who adds that you should “look for sheets with cooling technologies, and stay away from polyester and silk sheets as these fabrics tend to trap heat.”
You should also ditch the down and feather comforters, polyester sheets and any other plastic-based fabrics on the bed, advises Christian Alexander, COO and director of marketing and e-commerce at Nest Bedding. “While soft to the touch, they don’t absorb moisture and the thick material can prevent air flow, making you sweaty,” says Alexander. Here are reviewers’ favorite cooling sheets, whether you prefer percale, linen, sateen or bamboo — or a more crisp, smooth or silky sheet.
Lightweight and crisp: Parachute Percale Sheet Set, from $109 at Parachute (includes free shipping and returns)
Sonpal recommends these 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton Parachute sheets, which are cool-to-the-touch percale, breathable and lightweight. “They’re also durable, soft and easy to wash,” he adds. Real Simple names them one of the top cool sheets for 2021, noting they are a “dream come true” and “lightweight and crisp.” A reviewer on Business Insider writes of these sheets: “I’ve reviewed a lot of bedding brands, but Parachute is my go-to choice for its softness, comfort, and range of understated colors.” And on Sleepopolis they love the them too, calling them “oh so soft” and “top tier.”

These organic, long-staple cotton sheets beat out all other sheets to rank No. 1 in U.S. News and World Report’s list of best sheets of 2021 and best cooling sheets of 2021. The site notes that these sheets are “consistently cool, breathable sheets” that are great for “those who are willing to pay more initially for quality and durability.” Sleepopolis write that “these sheets feel silky and buttery smooth” with the reviewer saying that “these are the sheets I sleep on at home.”

Silky and breathable: Zoma Tencel Sheets, starting at $135 on ZomaSleep
“If you want a similar look and feel to silk, opt for Tencel, which is breathable, durable and moisture absorbent which helps dissipate body heat,” says Sonpal. These sheets were named by the Sleep Foundation as the most comfortable cooling sheets of 2021, with the site writing: “People with sensitive skin appreciate the material’s luxuriously smooth feel, and hot sleepers can rest comfortably thanks to the fabric’s exceptional breathability.” It also notes that compared to other Tencel sheets, the price is “below average.”

Long-lasting and luxurious: The Citizenry Stonewashed Linen Sheets, from $135 at The Citizenry (includes free shipping)
Linen is incredibly breathable, but many fear that it’s also too scratchy. Not the case with these gorgeous sheets: “This is some of the softest linen I’ve ever tested,” a Sleepopolis reviewer notes, who adds that these sheets — made from linen flax fibers sourced from France and stonewashed for extra softness — are “just as luxurious as they look.” Reviewers at Tuck.com also site the sheets “durability and temperature regulation” and note that they soften even further after you wash them. Pro tip when shopping for linen sheets: “When considering cooling sheets like linen, it’s important to look at the grams per square meter (GSM). The lower the GSM, the lighter and airier the sheets will be for hot sleepers,” says Carly Nance, co-founder of The Citizenry.

“Hands down the softest bamboo sheets we’ve had the chance to sleep on:” — that’s how sleep products review site Mattress Clarity describes these sheets. And “incredible softness” with “a smooth type of feel, similar to a sateen weave,” is how Sleepopolis describes these sheets, with the reviewer also noting that: “I tested these at the end of the Phoenix, Arizona summer and and found them to be quite comfortable.” These sheets may be a good pick for anyone who wants a more sustainable product (see the company’s commitment to sustainability here).
