This deal may be music to your ears: Amazon is now offering its popular Echo Dot for just 99 cents. The catch: You need to be a first-time Echo and Amazon Music customer, and sign up for Amazon Music for $9.99 a month (or $7.99 if you’re already a Prime member) with auto-renewal (but note that you can cancel). Here’s the scoop on the deal, and whether you should snag it.
What we like about the deal:
- The price: The deal comes with a 3rd generation Echo Dot, which is normally priced at $39.99. You get the Echo Dot when you also buy Amazon Music for $9.99 with auto-renewal. When you checkout, you’ll pay $10.98 total (or $8.98 for Prime members). Note that you can cancel your Amazon Music subscription (if you don’t, it will auto-renew at $9.99 per month), but when you do you will not get a refund of any fees already paid. - The products: The Echo Dot is Amazon’s well-reviewed, Alexa-enabled small smart speaker that is voice-activated and can play music, news and answer questions for you. “Amazon’s third-generation Echo Dot looks good and sounds great. With vastly improved audio, it’s now a distinctly better smart speaker than the Google Home Mini, and can replace the larger $99 Echo for less picky folks. That makes it our Editor’s Choice for entry-level smart speakers,” writes PC Magazine in its review of the 3rd generation Echo Dot. Amazon Music is a decent deal too, with ad-free access to 70 million songs. “Amazon’s standalone streaming music service provides an intriguing alternative to the many competing products on the market, especially for people who own Echo or Fire TV hardware,” writes PC Magazine in its review. Other things to consider:
This deal is only for first-time owners of an Amazon Echo device and first-time subscribers of Amazon Music, and if you get the deal and then don’t like Amazon Music, you will need to remember to cancel. If you already have a music streaming service, you may not want another; and if you don’t like the Echo Dot, you can return it, but you will only get a 99 cent refund for the device.
Bottom line: This is a great deal for someone who wants a smart speaker and plenty of music to listen to, but the deal is limited in terms of who qualifies to get it. And for some people who may not use Amazon Music regularly, it might not be worth the monthly cost.
