President-elect Joe Biden on Monday urged Americans to take the coronavirus vaccine when it becomes available to them, as he received his first dose during an on-camera event.
“I’m doing this to demonstrate that people should be prepared when it’s available to take the vaccine,” Biden said in Newark, Del. “There’s nothing to worry about. I’m looking forward to the second shot,” of the Pfizer PFE, -0.78% -BioNTech BNTX, +2.13% vaccine, he said.
Biden and his wife Jill are the latest on a growing list of public figures to be vaccinated in public. On Friday, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, second lady Karen Pence, received vaccination shots on camera, as did Surgeon General Jerome Adams.
As MarketWatch has reported, many Americans still say they wouldn’t get vaccinated against COVID-19, with some being skeptical about the vaccines’ research-and-development processes and others mistrusting the federal government.
President Donald Trump — who was infected with the coronavirus earlier this year — has not yet received the vaccine. He has said he intends to take it at “the appropriate time.”
New daily COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations all fell for a third straight day Monday, just as vaccine reinforcements were being shipped out.

Yet global equity markets SPX, -0.39% were spooked by reports out of the U.K. about a new fast-spreading strain of coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
