Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.72%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.72%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG), which rose 10.34% or 0.075 points to trade at 0.800 at the close. Meanwhile, Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) added 7.89% or 0.120 points to end at 1.640 and Perseus Mining Ltd (ASX:PRU) was up 7.02% or 0.080 points to 1.220 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Service Stream Ltd (ASX:SSM), which fell 12.13% or 0.290 points to trade at 2.100 at the close. Perenti Global Ltd (ASX:PRN) declined 5.11% or 0.070 points to end at 1.300 and Cooper Energy Ltd (ASX:COE) was down 4.05% or 0.015 points to 0.355.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 662 to 631 and 362 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 1.22% to 14.189.

Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.22% or 4.15 to $1859.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 0.29% or 0.14 to hit $47.48 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.35% or 0.18 to trade at $50.58 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.11% to 0.7565, while AUD/JPY fell 0.09% to 78.27.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 90.317.
