Bentley has already launched a plug-in hybrid version of its Bentayga SUV.
Bentley is known for its ultra-expensive, ultra-luxurious vehicles that can cost as much as a house and are powered by big V-8 or V-12 gasoline engines. At least one aspect of that is changing sooner than later. Sorry, it’s not the part about them being super pricey. Rather, the British automaker has announced that its vehicles will go electric in the not-too-distant future.
Bentley says that by 2026 its vehicles will use plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) or all-electric (EV) powertrains. And by 2030, its entire range will be all-electric. The plans are all part of Bentley’s Beyond100 initiative, which also aims for the automaker to be end-to-end carbon neutral by 2030.
If you’ve got a pile of cash currently burning a hole in your pocket or purse, Bentley has already launched a plug-in hybrid version of its Bentayga SUV, and says two more PHEV models are coming in 2021. Plug-in hybrids can typically deliver 20-50 miles of all-electric driving range, at which point the gas engine takes over.
Bentley is part of the Volkswagen Group, whose brands range from VW to Audi and Lamborghini. It is hardly the only automaker planning to electrify its cars. This is the case with most automakers. Bentley’s recent announcement is just more proof that no matter what kind of new car you’ll buy in the years ahead, there’s a good chance it will be electrified.
