Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 1.26%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 1.26% to hit a new 6-months high.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Beach Energy Ltd (ASX:BPT), which rose 8.16% or 0.140 points to trade at 1.855 at the close. Meanwhile, Unibail Rodamco Westfield (ASX:URW) added 7.33% or 0.33 points to end at 4.83 and Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) was up 6.87% or 0.090 points to 1.400 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Silver Lake Resources Ltd (ASX:SLR), which fell 9.41% or 0.175 points to trade at 1.685 at the close. Saracen Mineral Holdings Ltd (ASX:SAR) declined 9.02% or 0.47 points to end at 4.74 and Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX:NST) was down 8.88% or 1.240 points to 12.720.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 648 to 646 and 308 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 11.04% to 15.812.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.62% or 11.45 to $1826.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.09% or 0.47 to hit $43.53 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.96% or 0.44 to trade at $46.48 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.54% to 0.7324, while AUD/JPY rose 0.43% to 76.48.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 92.398.
