Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.17%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 0.17%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Western Areas Ltd (ASX:WSA), which rose 16.02% or 0.370 points to trade at 2.680 at the close. Meanwhile, Cromwell Property Group (ASX:CMW) added 8.05% or 0.070 points to end at 0.940 and AMP Ltd (ASX:AMP) was up 7.93% or 0.140 points to 1.905 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Challenger Ltd (ASX:CGF), which fell 9.77% or 0.520 points to trade at 4.800 at the close. Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB) declined 8.38% or 0.310 points to end at 3.390 and Austal Ltd (ASX:ASB) was down 6.52% or 0.24 points to 3.44.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 627 to 608 and 352 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 9.74% to 21.327.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.20% or 3.45 to $1762.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.47% or 0.19 to hit $40.54 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.30% or 0.13 to trade at $42.95 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.07% to 0.6909, while AUD/JPY rose 0.36% to 74.06.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 96.998.
