Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.41%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.41%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB), which rose 43.94% or 0.15 points to trade at 0.47 at the close. Meanwhile, Star Entertainment Group Ltd (ASX:SGR) added 4.76% or 0.03 points to end at 0.55 and St Barbara Ltd (ASX:SBM) was up 4.55% or 0.01 points to 0.17 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Atlas Arteria (ASX:ALX), which fell 4.87% or 0.26 points to trade at 5.08 at the close. Idp Education Ltd (ASX:IEL) declined 4.59% or 0.83 points to end at 17.27 and Seven Group Holdings Ltd (ASX:SVW) was down 4.09% or 1.69 points to 39.62.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 637 to 476 and 341 ended unchanged.

Shares in Atlas Arteria (ASX:ALX) fell to 3-years lows; down 4.87% or 0.26 to 5.08. Shares in Idp Education Ltd (ASX:IEL) fell to 3-years lows; falling 4.59% or 0.83 to 17.27.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 4.68% to 10.55.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.20% or 4.30 to $2,172.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 0.10% or 0.08 to hit $82.03 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.13% or 0.11 to trade at $86.19 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 0.65, while AUD/JPY fell 0.03% to 99.00.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 103.88.
