A midcentury modern home with a one-of-a-kind past is up for grabs in Palm Desert, Calif., for $1.2 million.

The two-bedroom ranch at 73498 Joshua Tree Street comes with some Hollywood history: It was once the primary residence of legendary actor William Boyd, who played cowboy hero Hopalong Cassidy in more than 60 Western dramas filmed between 1935 and 1948.

Boyd is believed to have partnered up with architect Charles W. Doty in 1955 to design and build the 1,892-square-foot home.

Besides its unique past, the house is also a time capsule of original details, including post-and-beam ceilings, a salt-and-pepper terrazzo fireplace, and custom screen doors.

“Boyd had many custom decor pieces made for the home that are still intact, including the metal screens with an art deco designed ‘HC’ for Hopalong Cassidy,” says listing agent Niko Esposito.

Other relics of this bygone era include the home’s unusual boomerang shape (with each bedroom at opposite ends of the house); a pink bathtub; and the iconic, midcentury, breeze-block accent walls.

Less obvious features, including the lack of windows in the front of the home, also come with an eyebrow-raising explanation.

“It’s rumored that the Boyds were avid nudists, which is why there were no main windows on the front of the house and a privacy wall around part of the pool,” Esposito explains.

The architecturally significant home, with its celebrity ties, could potentially receive a historic designation.

“Once the home is designated, an owner can apply for the Mills Act and save substantially on annual property taxes, adding value to the home,” notes Esposito.

As is, though, the desert abode still has plenty of significant selling points, including a long list of recent upgrades that include a new roof, AC units, solar, and a remodeled saltwater pool.

The third-acre lot’s location, in the sought-after South Palm Desert neighborhood, is also notable.

It’s within “close proximity to hiking trails and golfing, in addition to being within walking distance to the El Paseo District, which has fantastic restaurants, shopping, and art galleries,” Esposito says.
