The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9501), which rose 14.63% or 113.80 points to trade at 891.60 at the close. Meanwhile, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (TYO:7003) added 9.19% or 50.00 points to end at 594.00 and Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (TYO:9502) was up 5.55% or 108.50 points to 2,065.00 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. (TYO:5706), which fell 1.59% or 70.00 points to trade at 4,330.00 at the close. Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (TYO:4005) declined 1.29% or 4.70 points to end at 360.90 and SKY Perfect JSAT Holdings Inc. (TYO:9412) was down 1.05% or 7.00 points to 657.00.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 2753 to 896 and 223 ended unchanged.

The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 7.29% to 19.72.
Crude oil for January delivery was up 0.76% or 0.54 to $71.77 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in February rose 0.82% or 0.62 to hit $76.46 a barrel, while the February Gold Futures contract fell 0.02% or 0.35 to trade at $2,014.15 a troy ounce.
USD/JPY was up 0.50% to 145.65, while EUR/JPY rose 0.57% to 156.86.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 103.65.
