Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.43%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.43%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC), which rose 5.88% or 0.41 points to trade at 7.38 at the close. Meanwhile, Boral Ltd. (ASX:BLD) added 5.63% or 0.22 points to end at 4.13 and St Barbara Ltd (ASX:SBM) was up 5.41% or 0.03 points to 0.58 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Bank Of Queensland Ltd. (ASX:BOQ), which fell 5.03% or 0.32 points to trade at 6.04 at the close. Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) declined 4.15% or 0.93 points to end at 21.49 and Iluka Resources Ltd (ASX:ILU) was down 3.72% or 0.43 points to 11.12.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 672 to 562 and 446 ended unchanged.

Shares in Bank Of Queensland Ltd. (ASX:BOQ) fell to 52-week lows; falling 5.03% or 0.32 to 6.04. Shares in Boral Ltd. (ASX:BLD) rose to 52-week highs; rising 5.63% or 0.22 to 4.13.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 2.69% to 13.07.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.19% or 24.00 to $1,995.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.54% or 0.42 to hit $76.95 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.51% or 0.41 to trade at $80.69 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 0.89% to 0.67, while AUD/JPY fell 1.04% to 89.53.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.20% at 101.77.
