Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.29%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.29%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Pilbara Minerals Ltd (ASX:PLS), which rose 4.21% or 0.16 points to trade at 3.96 at the close. Meanwhile, Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:RSG) added 3.30% or 0.02 points to end at 0.47 and A2 Milk Company Ltd (ASX:A2M) was up 2.79% or 0.16 points to 5.90 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were St Barbara Ltd (ASX:SBM), which fell 10.66% or 0.07 points to trade at 0.55 at the close. Ramelius Resources Ltd (ASX:RMS) declined 3.08% or 0.05 points to end at 1.41 and Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:CUV) was down 2.83% or 0.58 points to 19.90.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 755 to 538 and 402 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 4.85% to 12.42 a new 1-month low.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.40% or 8.05 to $2,015.05 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.21% or 0.17 to hit $81.00 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.25% or 0.21 to trade at $84.97 a barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 0.67, while AUD/JPY rose 0.32% to 90.38.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.25% at 101.54.
