Bundeskartellamt, Germany’s antitrust regulator, said Tuesday that it has initiated proceedings against Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) to examine whether the company is of paramount significance for cross-market competition.

The regulator explained it has initiated the first step of a two-stage procedure against Microsoft.

Andreas Mundt, head of the Bundeskartellamt, stated that they have seen the increasing importance of the cloud services Azure and OneDrive, which are often connected to other Microsoft applications, as well as other Microsoft products.

As a result, he believes there are “good reasons” to consider whether Microsoft has outstanding cross-market importance.

“Such a finding would allow us to take action at an early stage and prohibit possible anti-competitive practices,” Mundt said.
