In 2019, Open Championship winner Shane Lowry received a payout of $1.935 million, and 2021 winner Colin Morikawa earned $2.07 million for his victory — the 2020 tournament did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament is set to be played at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland.

The women’s version of the tournament, the AIG Women’s Open scheduled for the first week of August, has a different venue and payout structure than the men’s tournament.

The increase in total prize money for the men’s tournament, as well as the record-setting payout for the winner, comes as the PGA Tour is losing some of its athletes to the Saudi-back LIV Golf International Series.

Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed are among the top golfers who recently joined the LIV circuit. The PGA Tour suspended all players who play in LIV Golf from competing in its tournaments, but there are some golf tournaments, including the Open Championship, that allow LIV golfers to participate because they have separate governing bodies irrespective of the PGA Tour.

There are 24 golfers who joined LIV who are also set to play in this week’s British Open. Among them are Mickelson, Johnson, DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia.

LIV Golf was founded by former pro golfer Greg Norman and aims to challenge the PGA Tour. The league is an eight-tournament circuit that features seven regular-season tournaments and one team event in October. Events will be played in areas including New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, Bangkok, Saudi Arabia and Miami.

The golf series is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.

Phil Mickelson was reportedly offered $200 million just to play in the league, and Dustin Johnson was reportedly offered $150 million to play. Those amounts would be simply for participation, and further tournament winnings for LIV Golf events could make payments to those golfers even bigger.

Many have criticized Mickelson for joining the league after comments surfaced that the golfer seemed to brush off human rights violations by the Saudis.

“They’re scary mother [expletive] to get involved with,” Mickelson told his biographer Alan Shipnuck in February. “We know they killed [Washington Post reporter Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”

Tiger Woods was asked about golfers departing the PGA to join LIV in the days leading up to the Open Championship.

“I disagree with it,” Woods said. “I think that what they’ve done is they’ve turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position.”
