Actor Bruce Willis will retire, at least for now, following a medical diagnosis, his daughter posted on social media.
Willis, well known for his roles in movies like “Die Hard,” “The Fifth Element” and “12 Monkeys,” was diagnosed with aphasia, a cognitive disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak, write or understand language. The 67-year-old actor rose to fame in the ’80s as a co-star with Cybill Shepherd of the TV series “Moonlighting.”
“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” his family posted on Instagram. “As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”
“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support,” they continued in their statement. “We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”
The post was written in conjunction with his daughters Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn, and his wife, Emma, and ex-wife, actress Demi Moore. Willis and Moore, who were married from 1987 to 2000, remained friends after their divorce.
