Americans suffer through billions of marketing and spam calls a year, and the problem is getting worse. That’s why this deal caught my eye: The RoboKiller app is now on sale for about $1.70 a month, or $39.99 for a 2-year subscription. (That’s about half off its regular price.) Here’s what to know before you buy.

How does RoboKiller work? RoboKiller blocks millions of telemarketers and robocalls from ringing (so you won’t even know those callers called) even if they are changing their numbers. The unique thing with RoboKiller is that it has an AnswerBot answer the phone for you and then waste the marketers’ time talking to them; you later get to listen to recordings of calls. (Check out this sample video of how it works.) The company has a list of 500 million phone scams that it will block for you, and you can adjust the level of call blocking. It can also protect from many text scams.

What we like about the deal: Mashable calls this app “the best for getting revenge on scammers,” noting that “if nothing else, you should install this clever robocall blocker for the sheer entertainment value.” In the Apple app store, it has gotten more than 300,000 reviews and 4.5 stars. The app normally costs more than $3 per month, so this roughly $1.70 a month price is a deal.

Other things to know: Like most of these apps, Robokiller isn’t perfect – some calls and texts may come through. And there are plenty of ways to block marketing and spam calls for free or at a lower cost.

Bottom line: This buy is all about the entertainment value, and the revenge factor. And at about $1.70 a month, it’s an affordable, and discounted, way to get it.
