More than half of American adults have gardened during the pandemic, according to Garden Center Magazine, but many of them are doing it with gear that’s less than stellar. So we asked professional gardeners and landscapers which gardening gloves they used themselves and recommend to others.

Best bang for your buck: Diesel Pro-Tekk General Purpose Gloves, roughly $2 a pair on Amazon

Amazon

Tracey Price, owner of landscape design firm American Growers Company, recommends these and notes that they are the go-to gloves for many of the vendors and professionals she works with because of their protective coating, breathability and durability. Some of their perks: great gripping ability; good performance in dry and wet conditions and a very low price. You can use them not only for gardening, but also for construction, package handling and more. Many verified Amazon reviewers rave about the gloves too, with one noting that, “I do a lot of gardening and really love these gloves. They fit you like skin, have a good grip surface, etc. I tried many gloves and these are the best.”  Buy on Amazon.

Best for all-day gardening: CLC Custom Leathercraft Black and Grey Handyman Gloves, $16.13 on Walmart

Walmart

Professional gardener and landscaper Ramiro Aquino swears by these gloves because of their material and comfort. “They’re great because I can’t feel the seam in the fingers and they’re comfortable to wear all day long,” says Aquino. Indeed, the microfiber has plenty of padding around your hand, reinforced fingertips for extra comfort, and an elastic cuff that helps keep the gloves in place. One verified reviewer on Walmart simply writes: “Incredible, good work gloves! I do tree removal and these gloves have outlasted any other pair I’ve had in the past year. Normally I wear holes or bust seams within a month to six weeks, but I’ve had these for nearly six months and only one small hole and that’s after 6 washes! Still using them daily!” Buy on Amazon or on Walmart.

Best for comfort: Firm Grip Goatskin Leather Gloves with Safety Cuff, $5.98 on Home Depot

Home Depot

A soft fleece lining makes these goatskin leather gloves extra comfortable to wear while gardening, and Price notes that it’s often essential to have a protective coating on the gloves like these do. These are a reviewer favorite on HomeDepot.com as well, with one verified buyer writing: “I use these daily for work. I’ve bought many pairs of them. They are comfortable and last a long time. Quick on and off. Soft and durable. Best part is the price.” Buy on Amazon or on Home Depot.

Best for unpredictable climates: Showa Best 306 Gloves, $10.10 on Amazon

Amazon

If you live in a place where it’s sunny one day, wet the next, these gloves might be a good option for you, says Price — who likes that they’re water repellent, breathable and offer a long lasting grip in both dry and wet conditions. The gloves are coated in full foam latex coupled with an additional latex grip that covers the palm and fingertips, and have a 13-gauge nylon and polyester knitted lining. Buy on Amazon.

Best if you need to be nimble: Nitrile Gloves, $6.60 a pair on Duluth Trading

Duluth Trading

Nicole Burgess, florist, landscape stylist and owner of LA Native Florals, says she likes gloves with a nylon liner and nitrile dripping like these. “They’re durable but not too thick,” says Burgess. As one reviewer on DuluthTrading.com writes: “At last, a gardening glove that actually fits! No more taking the glove off when I need to feel for that weed stem I’m about to pull … The gloves are flexible and light, but yet protect me from thistles, etc., and the nitrile coating gives a good grip.” Buy on Duluth Trading.

Best for tending to roses or other thorny plants:  Magid Rose Pruning Gardening Gloves, $23.41 on Amazon

Amazon

These gloves offer thorn protection with their puncture-resistant, synthetic leather padding and reinforced fingertips. An elbow-length cuff protects forearms from thorns and a knuckle guard provides added coverage from cuts and scratches. With nearly 2,500 reviews, and 4.7 out of 5 star ratings, on Amazon, it’s no wonder rose enthusiasts choose these gloves as their go-to pair. Buy from Walmart or buy on Amazon.
