“
‘Well my time has come.’
”
That phrase began the final staff missive of Walter Mondale, the former vice president and U.S. senator from Minnesota who died at 93 on Monday. The message, Insider reported, was sent out via email upon Mondale’s death.
Elsewhere in the 94-word message, addressed “Dear Team” and signed “Fritz,” Mondale commends the staff, saying no public servant had ever had a better group to work alongside, observing that “we have accomplished so much” and offering encouragement for a continuation of “the good fight.”
Mondale — a Korean War veteran and a lifelong member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, which in its own statement called Mondale the party’s “North Star” — says in the letter that “Joe [Biden] in the White House certainly helps.”
President Biden has been quoted as saying that, upon being offered the No. 2 slot on Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential ticket, Mondale was the first person with whom he conferred.
The entirety of the note to Mondale staffers, as first published by Axios:
Dear Team,
Well my time has come. I am eager to rejoin Joan and Eleanor. Before I Go I wanted to let you know how much you mean to me. Never has a public servant had a better group of people working at their side!
Together we have accomplished so much and I know you will keep up the good fight.
Joe in the White House certainly helps.
I always knew it would be okay if I arrived some place and was greeted by one of you!
My best to all of you!
Fritz
