Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.10%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.10%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Newcrest Mining Ltd (ASX:NCM), which rose 4.05% or 1.020 points to trade at 26.220 at the close. Meanwhile, Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) added 3.32% or 0.050 points to end at 1.555 and Telstra Corporation Ltd. (ASX:TLS) was up 2.52% or 0.080 points to 3.250 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were AMP Ltd (ASX:AMP), which fell 11.04% or 0.170 points to trade at 1.370 at the close. Nearmap Ltd (ASX:NEA) declined 7.30% or 0.170 points to end at 2.160 and Nanosonics Ltd (ASX:NAN) was down 6.58% or 0.48 points to 6.82.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 820 to 531 and 369 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was up 0.03% to 14.668.

Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.02% or 0.45 to $1843.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.61% or 0.36 to hit $58.32 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.62% or 0.38 to trade at $61.09 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.35% to 0.7748, while AUD/JPY rose 0.36% to 81.03.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 90.355.
