At the close in Frankfurt, the DAX lost 1.06% to hit a new 1-month low, while the MDAX index declined 0.70%, and the TecDAX index lost 0.51%.
The best performers of the session on the DAX were Daimler AG NA O.N. (DE:DAIGn), which rose 2.23% or 1.280 points to trade at 58.740 at the close. Meanwhile, Covestro AG (DE:1COV) added 1.41% or 0.780 points to end at 56.280 and MTU Aero Engines NA O.N. (DE:MTXGn) was up 1.02% or 1.95 points to 193.90 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Fresenius Medical Care KGAA ST (DE:FMEG), which fell 2.73% or 1.880 points to trade at 66.990 at the close. Deutsche Bank AG NA O.N. (DE:DBKGn) declined 2.44% or 0.211 points to end at 8.447 and Muench. Rueckvers. VNA O.N. (DE:MUVGn) was down 2.47% or 5.60 points to 220.70.
The top performers on the MDAX were Sartorius AG VZO O.N. (DE:SATG_p) which rose 4.40% to 408.200, Qiagen NV (DE:QIA) which was up 3.14% to settle at 44.635 and Hella KGaA Hueck & Co (DE:HLE) which gained 3.01% to close at 51.05.
The worst performers were Varta AG (DE:VAR1) which was down 15.39% to 153.400 in late trade, Evotec AG O.N. (DE:EVTG) which lost 11.55% to settle at 32.790 and Rational AG (DE:RAAG) which was down 5.01% to 796.00 at the close.
The top performers on the TecDAX were Sartorius AG VZO O.N. (DE:SATG_p) which rose 4.40% to 408.200, Qiagen NV (DE:QIA) which was up 3.14% to settle at 44.635 and Nemetschek AG O.N. (DE:NEKG) which gained 2.63% to close at 58.500.
The worst performers were Varta AG (DE:VAR1) which was down 15.39% to 153.400 in late trade, Evotec AG O.N. (DE:EVTG) which lost 11.55% to settle at 32.790 and Software AG (DE:SOWGn) which was down 3.26% to 33.500 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by 406 to 258 and 35 ended unchanged.

The DAX volatility index, which measures the implied volatility of DAX options, was up 3.48% to 29.43 a new 1-month high.
Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.98% or 18.10 to $1859.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.40% or 0.21 to hit $52.55 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.53% or 0.29 to trade at $55.39 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.11% to 1.2134, while EUR/GBP rose 0.17% to 0.8848.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 90.510.
