Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Friday he expects the formal impeachment charge of former president Donald Trump to be delivered Monday, setting the stage for Trump’s trial over alleged incitement to insurrection.

“I’ve been speaking to the Republican leader about the timing and duration of the trial, but make no mistake: a trial will be held in the United States Senate and there will be a vote on whether to convict the president,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.

“I have spoken to the Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi, who informed me that the articles will be delivered to the Senate on Monday.”

The House voted 232 to 197 on Jan. 13 to impeach Trump, accusing him of inciting the mob of rioters and insurrectionists that stormed the Capitol Jan. 6, forcing lawmakers into hiding and temporarily halting the certification of Joe Biden as Trump’s elected successor.

While Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell had proposed a trial not start until February, Schumer’s announcement would indicate a faster beginning and came as he and McConnell have wrangled over how to organize the 50-50 split Senate.

Republicans have said Democrats should promise to maintain the filibuster requiring 60 votes to end debate on almost any legislation in return for agreeing to a power sharing pact. Democrats have rejected that condition, calling it unprecedented.
