At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.21%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.25%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 3.40% or 2.00 points to trade at 60.86 at the close. Meanwhile, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.85% or 1.47 points to end at 53.01 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 2.66% or 7.82 points to 301.64 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which fell 2.09% or 1.77 points to trade at 83.22 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 2.04% or 3.66 points to end at 175.43 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was down 1.78% or 3.78 points to 209.11.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which rose 12.40% to 22.57, Apache Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 9.45% to settle at 18.23 and Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which gained 7.85% to close at 8.24.
The worst performers were PerkinElmer Inc (NYSE:PKI) which was down 4.10% to 152.72 in late trade, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which lost 4.06% to settle at 178.39 and Southern Company (NYSE:SO) which was down 3.59% to 59.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ArcLight Clean Transition Corp (NASDAQ:ACTC) which rose 94.18% to 23.67, BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) which was up 85.28% to settle at 1.0700 and ENGlobal Corporation (NASDAQ:ENG) which gained 54.38% to close at 6.7000.
The worst performers were Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which was down 20.69% to 1.150 in late trade, LM Funding America Inc (NASDAQ:LMFA) which lost 20.41% to settle at 1.9500 and Black Diamond Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BDTX) which was down 15.02% to 29.53 at the close.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2013 to 1091 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2045 rose and 1014 declined, while 52 ended unchanged.
Shares in Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) rose to 52-week highs; up 3.40% or 2.00 to 60.86. Shares in Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) rose to all time highs; rising 2.66% or 7.82 to 301.64. Shares in ArcLight Clean Transition Corp (NASDAQ:ACTC) rose to all time highs; up 94.18% or 11.48 to 23.67. Shares in BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) rose to 52-week highs; rising 85.28% or 0.4925 to 1.0700. Shares in ENGlobal Corporation (NASDAQ:ENG) rose to 5-year highs; rising 54.38% or 2.3600 to 6.7000.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.70% to 23.43.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.26% or 4.90 to $1855.70 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.72% or 0.90 to hit $53.15 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.56% or 0.87 to trade at $56.53 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.46% to 1.2205, while USD/JPY fell 0.47% to 103.75.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.46% at 90.025.
