At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.66%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.36%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 5.60% or 2.53 points to trade at 47.74 at the close. Meanwhile, Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) added 2.19% or 1.82 points to end at 84.85 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 1.35% or 1.83 points to 137.85 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which fell 2.45% or 3.24 points to trade at 128.81 at the close. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 1.74% or 0.89 points to end at 50.19 and Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) was down 1.49% or 3.30 points to 218.74.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which rose 11.26% to 185.15, Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which was up 6.84% to settle at 269.81 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) which gained 5.60% to close at 47.74.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 8.09% to 808.85 in late trade, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) which lost 6.92% to settle at 47.92 and Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which was down 4.29% to 135.09 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) which rose 111.95% to 3.370, GeoVax Labs Inc (NASDAQ:GOVX) which was up 63.33% to settle at 5.3900 and Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) which gained 57.44% to close at 1.410.
The worst performers were Bit Digital Inc (NASDAQ:BTBT) which was down 27.13% to 18.2400 in late trade, Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which lost 24.66% to settle at 8.77 and Future Fintech Group Inc (NASDAQ:FTFT) which was down 24.41% to 5.7600 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1874 to 1213 and 75 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1722 fell and 1340 advanced, while 46 ended unchanged.
Shares in Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) rose to all time highs; up 11.26% or 18.74 to 185.15. Shares in Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) rose to 5-year highs; rising 111.95% or 1.780 to 3.370. Shares in Avinger Inc (NASDAQ:AVGR) rose to 52-week highs; up 57.44% or 0.514 to 1.410.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.64% to 24.50.
Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.57% or 10.50 to $1845.90 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 0.42% or 0.22 to hit $52.02 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 1.02% or 0.57 to trade at $55.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.47% to 1.2160, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 104.17.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 90.470.
