Australia stocks higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.21%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 0.21% to hit a new 6-months high.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Unibail Rodamco Westfield (ASX:URW), which rose 16.25% or 0.65 points to trade at 4.65 at the close. Meanwhile, Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:WHC) added 8.05% or 0.095 points to end at 1.275 and Viva Energy Group Ltd (ASX:VEA) was up 6.74% or 0.125 points to 1.980 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Charter Hall Group (ASX:CHC), which fell 5.95% or 0.86 points to trade at 13.59 at the close. Nextdc Ltd (ASX:NXT) declined 5.91% or 0.77 points to end at 12.25 and Saracen Mineral Holdings Ltd (ASX:SAR) was down 5.63% or 0.32 points to 5.36.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 684 to 681 and 278 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 26.12% to 14.700 a new 6-months low.

Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.12% or 2.25 to $1885.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.10% or 0.04 to hit $41.30 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.18% or 0.08 to trade at $43.90 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 0.16% to 0.7307, while AUD/JPY fell 0.18% to 76.39.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.06% at 92.578.
