London Markets: Another dash for trash triggered in London after Moderna vaccine news

Another dash for trash was triggered in London on Monday, as a variety of hard-hit companies surged in the wake of news that biotechnology company Moderna MRNA, +5.89% ‘s vaccine was 94.5% effective against coronavirus.

Double-digit gains were registered for casino operator Rank RNK, +10.59% and cinema operator Cineworld CINE, +13.86%, and in the FTSE 100, engine maker Rolls-Royce RR, +10.51%, International Airlines Group IAG, +10.58%, and GKN Aerospace owner Melrose Industries MRO, +6.79% surged.

Major oil companies BP BP, +4.72% and Royal Dutch Shell RDSA, +4.83% both rallied as well in response to the vaccine news and the hope the economy will return to normal next year. Food delivery companies Ocado OCDO, -3.11% and Just Eat Takeaway JET, -2.32% declined, as did disinfectant maker Reckitt Benckiser RB, -1.89%.

The FTSE 100 UKX, +1.77% jumped 1.9%. The index was up about 0.7% before the vaccine news, helped by data out of resource-intensive China that showed a big jump in industrial production in October.
