The hotly contested 2020 U.S. presidential election could finally be called, as the Associated Press and other media outlets projected that Joe Biden would collect enough Electoral College votes to beat incumbent President Donald Trump.
And while the extremely close race reveals that the country remains bitterly divided, social media was flooded with images and videos of many Americans celebrating Biden’s expected win — and elated folks in other countries, as well.
Residents in places like Times Square and Harlem in New York City, and the nation’s capital Washington, D.C., (areas which leaned heavily toward Biden) posted videos to Instagram and Twitter of drivers honking car horns, people ringing cowbells and clapping, and similar acts of celebration in the streets.
In Los Angeles, two Biden supporters were spotted running around the Silverlake reservoir while banging pots and pans.

And cities in swing states where the ballot counts have been closely scrutinized since Nov. 3, including Philadelphia and Atlanta, also saw Biden supporters publicly expressing their joy.
Images and video purporting to show other nations celebrating the news were also being passed around online, such as cheering in Canada, fireworks in London and bells ringing in Paris.
“You hear that noise on the streets? That’s JOY!” tweeted CNN commentator Van Jones, who added “come out to the party” on the air.
Crowds began gathering outside the White House on Saturday afternoon, as well. A “non-scalable” fence had been installed around the president’s 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. residence before the election over concerns of civil unrest. In recent days, as the election appeared to be going Biden’s way, people began posting signs on the fence reading “You’re fired!” and “Eviction Notice.”

And Biden victory parties also began amassing outside of Trump’s namesake buildings in Chicago and Manhattan. People sang Queen’s “We are the Champions” outside of the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago.
Cars driving by Manhattan’s Trump Tower honked their horns, while individuals gathered there cheered.
