Van Jones, a former Obama administration environmental official, and CNN political commentator had an emotional response to former Vice President Joe Biden being projected winner of the 2020 presidential election on Saturday.

‘It’s easier to be a parent this morning. Character MATTERS. Being a good person MATTERS. This is a big deal.’

— Van Jones

In tearful remarks on Saturday, Van Jones recounted what some may view as encapsulating aspects of the four-year term of President Donald Trump, where cultural and socioeconomic divides in America were seen widening, particularly along racial fault lines.

“This is vindication for a lot of people who have really suffered. You know the ‘I can’t breathe,’ that wasn’t just George Floyd, that was a lot of people who felt that they couldn’t breathe,” he said, referring to social protest that ensued across the globe after Floyd, a Black man, told a Minneapolis police officer that he couldn’t breathe more than 20 times in the moments before he died, as the officer pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck until he perished.

The passionate remarks from Van Jones come after Biden was projected Saturday to win the U.S. presidential election, defeating Trump amid a bitter campaign fought against the backdrop of a global pandemic and a presidency that some have viewed as polarizing.
