James Carville, the longtime Democratic campaign operative, could not be more confident of a Joe Biden victory Tuesday night, predicting that President Trump is “going to lose soundly tonight.”
He continued:
“ ‘[Trump] is a loser. He lost the biggest midterm in 100 years with the highest turnout. His approval is 43%. He’s not a paper tiger — he’s nothing. People have been tired of this guy since the night he was elected. The only people who fear him are these bed-wetting Democrats. We’re going to win. Get over it.’ ”
Carville made his name during Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, the last presidential candidate to unseat an incumbent president. Like Trump, George H.W. Bush was battling a weakened economy, and Carville — who just nine months ago appeared convinced Democrats were on the cusp of squandering the “moral imperative” to defeat Trump — believes that Trump will meet the same fate as Bush did.
Polling averages show that Biden has a solid lead nationally, but a smaller lead in battleground states including his native Pennsylvania, which could be the state that puts either candidate over the top.
Donald Trump won the presidential election in 2016 despite the fact that many polls that showed him 2 to 3 percentage points behind Hillary Clinton in key battleground states, and some Democrats and liberals, notably filmmaker Michael Moore, have worried publicly that polls are underestimating Trump yet again.
At the same time, Joe Biden’s lead in the battleground states is larger today than Hillary Clinton’s on Election Day four years ago, according to election forecaster FiveThirtyEight.
