‘It’s the harshest president campaign attack in what is shaping up to be an even uglier messaging year than 2016.’

That’s Jonathan Swan, the Axios journalist who pressed President Donald Trump in that already infamous interview earlier this month, commenting on a recent spot from the Trump campaign.

“What happened to Joe Biden,” took over YouTube’s masthead and was splashed all over Fox News in a digital advertising effort that cost “high seven figures,” according to Axios.

Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign’s communications director tweeted about the ad barrage:

Here’s the full hit, which splices old and new footage of Joe Biden in an attempt to cast doubt on the mental fitness of Trump’s rival for the White house. It’s racked up millions of clicks already:

Axios reported that, prior to this ad, some in the Trump campaign were hesitant to attack Biden on this front, citing concerns that it could alienate seniors. Clearly, they were overruled.

The Biden campaign responded to the ad, saying “Donald Trump is spectacularly failing every conceivable strategic test by ramping up mentions of this subject at all.”

The spokesman ended his statement with this jab: “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.”
