India stocks lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 0.68%

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 0.68%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 0.60%.

The best performers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Britannia Industries Ltd (NS:BRIT), which rose 2.13% or 73.60 points to trade at 3530.00 at the close. Meanwhile, HDFC Bank Ltd (NS:HDBK) added 1.80% or 19.05 points to end at 1075.50 and Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL) was up 1.43% or 9.05 points to 643.95 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Coal India Ltd (NS:COAL), which fell 4.96% or 7.05 points to trade at 135.05 at the close. AXIS Bank Ltd (NS:AXBK) declined 4.70% or 19.95 points to end at 404.90 and Tech Mahindra Ltd (NS:TEML) was down 3.18% or 17.85 points to 543.00.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were HDFC Bank Ltd (BO:HDBK) which rose 1.97% to 1076.40, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (BO:KTKM) which was up 1.39% to settle at 1359.65 and Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which gained 1.24% to close at 567.25.

The worst performers were AXIS Bank Ltd. (BO:AXBK) which was down 4.78% to 404.75 in late trade, Tech Mahindra Ltd (BO:TEML) which lost 3.22% to settle at 543.00 and State Bank Of India (BO:SBI) which was down 2.87% to 179.30 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the India National Stock Exchange by 1050 to 611 and 38 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1542 fell and 1071 advanced, while 127 ended unchanged.

Shares in Britannia Industries Ltd (NS:BRIT) rose to all time highs; up 2.13% or 73.60 to 3530.00.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 0.61% to 28.9100.

Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.23% or 4.10 to $1784.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.23% or 0.09 to hit $38.58 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.05 to trade at $40.98 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.14% to 75.503, while EUR/INR rose 0.32% to 85.1595.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 97.138.
