The CEOs of some of America’s biggest tech companies praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling Monday protecting LGBTQ workers from job discrimination.
In a 6-3 decision, the high court ruled that LGBTQ employees are protected under the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964, extending federal protections to millions of workers in states where they were not previously protected from job discrimination.
Apple Inc. AAPL, +1.23% Chief Executive Tim Cook, perhaps the country’s highest-profile openly gay executive, said in a tweet that he was “grateful” for the decision. “LGBTQ people deserve equal treatment in the workplace and throughout society, and today’s decision further underlines that federal law protects their right to fairness,” he said.
Alphabet Inc. GOOGL, +0.55% GOOG, +0.47% CEO Sundar Pichai hailed the ruling as “another step forward in the fight for equality for all LGBTQ+ people,” and announced donations totalling $2.4 million to LGBTQ+ organizations in honor of Pride Month.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft Corp. MSFT, +0.63% , praised the “important milestone” and said: “Let’s use this decision as a catalyst to drive progress in our society.”
Facebook Inc. FB, +1.71% CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post that the ruling was “a huge step forward in fighting against discrimination.”
“The LGBTQ+ community deserves fair and equal treatment just like everyone else, and I’m glad our highest court has affirmed those rights,” he added.
Twitter Inc. TWTR, +2.12% CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted an ABC News video of the breaking news Monday morning.
