Viral video shows a 5-year-old black girl in Houston being comforted by a white police officer during a George Floyd protest after she started crying and asked, “Are you going to shoot us?”
Simone Bartee was protesting with her parents in Houston on Saturday when she broke down in tears — and the officer knelt down to see what was the matter, the local news station KHOU reported.
She asked the policeman whether she and her family would be shot, according to her father, who posted about the interaction on Twitter.
But the officer gave her a hug and replied, “We’re here to protect you, OK? We’re not here to hurt you at all.”
“You can protest, you can party — you can do whatever you want,” he said.
A still frame from a tweeted video of the Wednesday interaction.
The video has gone viral on Twitter TWTR, +3.41% with nearly 30,000 retweets and nearly 95,000 likes as of midday on Sunday.
