It’s a bit peculiar, to paraphrase White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, how face coverings have emerged during the coronavirus pandemic as a new culture-war front, but it’s safe to say New York state and the 600 entrants to an open call from Gov. Andrew Cuomo to submit public-service video advertisements are firmly among the wear-a-mask forces.
In fact, the contest was dubbed “Wear a Mask New York,” and its top honorees, which are slated to be aired on television as public-service announcements, were just announced: “We Heart New York,” a video created by Bunny Lake Films, and “You Can Still Smile,” by Natalia Bougadellis and Emory Parker.
Some 186,000 votes were cast, the state said.

The contest was launched May 5 and was overseen by the governor’s daughter, Mariah Kennedy Cuomo.
