Milan-based ex-Manchester United star praised for giving ‘clearer coronavirus advice’ than political leaders

Former Manchester United soccer player Ashley Young has been praised for giving clearer advice over coronavirus than U.K. and U.S. political leaders.

The England international, who now plays for Inter Milan, warned that supermarkets posed the biggest risk for spreading and catching the virus, giving shoppers strong advice on how to stay safe.

Italy has been on lockdown for more than two weeks, while British Prime Minister Boris Johnson instigated his own lockdown on Monday and most U.S. states have imposed restrictive measures.

Television host James Corden was among those praising Young, he said: “Here is Ashley Young giving clearer advice than any government minister or member of Congress.”

Young reminded Brits that “lockdown means lockdown” after speaking to family and friends who told him getting food in the U.K. was “just crazy.” Some supermarkets in the U.K. have introduced an early shopping hour for the elderly and National Health Service workers after panic buying and stockpiling has frequently left the shelves bare. Food retailers have been packed in recent days as Johnson has ramped up measures to stop the virus spreading. Buying essential items, such as food, is one of only four reasons people can leave the house.

“Queuing to go into supermarkets is standard, not because it’s for stockpiling or greed. Supermarkets have limited the number of people entering at any time so it’s never overcrowded. So wait and be patient,” Young said on Twitter.

“If you have to get in the lift [elevator] only get in with 1 more person, 2 people per lift at one time. And stand on opposite sides of the lift and face the wall — don’t breathe outwards towards that stranger,” he added.

The former Manchester United captain urged people to wear gloves while shopping — to avoid spreading coronavirus through carts — and use masks or scarfs. He advised shoppers to keep their cart behind them while unpacking to stop others coming too close.

“This may sound harsh but treat everybody that’s not in your household as if they have the virus, you just don’t know!!!” he added.
