President Donald Trump on Saturday said Congressional leaders of both parties were working closely with his administration to finish work on a coronavirus aid package to soften the blow of the coronavirus pandemic.
“I think we’re getting very close” to a deal, Trump told reporters at a daily coronavirus briefing.
The legislation will give relief to small businesses and affected industries and give direct payments to workers.
“There has never been anything like what we’re doing on the Hill right now. They’re negotiating. And everybody is working hard and they want to get,” he said.
Trump also said the administration had reached agreements with Canada and Mexico on new travel rules at the northern and southern borders and said he discussed the plans with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Trump singled out WallMart WMT, -4.59% and Hanesbrands Inc. HBI, -2.29% for actions the companies are taking in response to COVID-19.
He said Haynesbrands was retrofitting its manufacturing capability to produce masks.
