‘They have, in my view, contorted themselves into making arguments about freedom of speech and censorship, which they are hanging on to because it’s in their commercial interests.’
That’s Hillary Clinton offering up her take on Facebook FB, -0.83% in an interview with The Atlantic over the weekend.
And because of that, she explained, there’s good reason to believe that the social-media giant is “not just going to reelect Trump, but intends to reelect Trump.”
Clinton recounted how she once tried to get Facebook to take down that edited video falsely showing Nancy Pelosi slurring. Facebook responded by saying that it lets users make up their own minds.
With that, Clinton said that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is “Trumpian” and “authoritarian” when it comes to his unwillingness to battle the spread of disinformation and propaganda that has exploded on his platform in recent years.
“I feel like you’re negotiating with a foreign power sometimes,” she said. “He’s immensely powerful. This is a global company that has huge influence in ways that we’re only beginning to understand.”
Clinton added “that it’s to [Zuckerberg’s] and Facebook’s advantage not to cross Trump… And it just gives me a pit in my stomach.”
