For a country that’s been in the news as much as it has lately, you’d think Americans would have some vague concept of where it is on a map.
But, no, for most, the location of Iran remains a mystery. In fact, a new Morning Consult/Politico survey found that fewer than a quarter of registered voters polled can identify it on this map of the world:
Zooming in doesn’t help much either, with 28% finding it on this map:
Here’s the answer on the big map, with all the misfires highlighted:
OK, be honest. Did you find it on either one of those maps? If so, you are most definitely in the minority. Of note, men were more likely to get it right than women as were, understandably, the wealthier and more educated.
Here’s the full breakdown of the poll, which surveyed 1,995 registered voters between Jan. 4 and 5 to come up with the results:
Historically, Americans are geographically challenged when it comes to finding foreign countries, Morning Consult said, even in the midst of a conflict. A similar poll in 2017 asking the location of North Korea delivered similarly dismal results.
