Stuttgart-based Daimler said it had retained the title of being the best-selling luxury brand last year, but rival BMW (DE:) has yet to give a breakdown of its global sales by brand. Audi will also release global sales figures this week.
Mercedes on Thursday said it posted sales records in Germany, China and the United States thanks to strong demand for its sports utility vehicles and high-end limousines.
Mercedes-Benz said sales rose 6.2% in China where local customers ordered the top-end Maybach Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousine at a rate of more than 700 vehicles per month.
As a carmaking group BMW, which owns the Mini and Rolls-Royce (LON:) brands, sold 2.52 million vehicles last year, beating Daimler, which sold 2.46 million Mercedes-Benz and Smart vehicles.
