Rick Gates, former campaign aide to President Donald Trump, departs after a bond hearing at U.S. District Court in Washington, on Dec. 11, 2017.

Former Trump campaign adviser Richard Gates was sentenced to 45 days in prison and three years of probation on Tuesday by a federal judge less willing to reward Gates for his extensive cooperation with the special counsel’s Russia investigation than prosecutors were.

Prosecutors last week said they wouldn’t oppose a request for no jail time from Gates, who served as a senior campaign aide and deputy chairman of the president’s 2017 inauguration.

Gates doesn’t have to report to jail immediately, and will be able to serve the sentence on weekends or another intermittent schedule, the judge said.

Gates pleaded guilty in 2018 to lying to investigators and conspiracy related to consulting work in Ukraine in the early 2010s, at the time becoming another senior Trump aide to agree to cooperate in Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and any links to the Trump campaign.
