Here’s everything coming to Netflix in December — and what’s leaving

As winter sets in, Netflix Inc. NFLX, +0.85%   will provide a perfect excuse to stay inside and curl up on the couch this December, releasing a pair of Oscar contenders, a host of comedy specials and what it hopes can be its own version of “Game of Thrones.”

There’s been plenty of Oscar buzz around “Marriage Story,” (Dec. 6), written and directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, about a couple struggling through a gruelling divorce. The film debuted at the Venice Film Festival in August and hit select theaters in November.

Another Oscar contender could be “The Two Popes” (Dec. 20), starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, about the behind-the-scenes drama as Pope Benedict handed the Vatican’s reigns over to his successor, Pope Francis.

A third Netflix original movie will likely get little Oscar attention but more viewer eyeballs: Michael Bay’s “6 Underground” (Dec. 13). Ryan Reynolds stars in this action flick that looks to have plenty of fast cars, shootouts, pretty explosions and wise-crackerey. Because sometimes you just want to turn off the ol’ brain, and that’s OK.

“The Witcher” debuts Dec. 20, and Netflix is hoping the fantasy epic can become a flagship series that can cross over to win non-fantasy fans, much as “Game of Thrones” did for HBO. The series, starring Henry Cavill, is based on a popular book and videogame series about a supernatural monster-hunter.

December will also bring the second season of “You,” (Dec. 26), the charming(?) stalker drama that found new life on Netflix after flopping on cable, Season 2 of “Lost in Space” (Dec. 24), a Kevin Hart six-part documentary series — Kevin Hart: Don’t F**k This Up (Dec. 27) — and comedy specials from Tiffany Haddish, Ronny Chieng, Jack Whitehall, John Mulaney and Michelle Wolf.

And it’ll be your last chance to watch “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Thor: Ragnarok” before they switch over to Disney+. “Frasier” Seasons 1-10, “Pulp Fiction” and the first five “Rocky“
movies are also going away soon.
