U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.52%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the fell 0.52%, while the index declined 0.30%, and the index declined 0.14%.

The best performers of the session on the were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:), which rose 2.26% or 5.50 points to trade at 248.76 at the close. Meanwhile, The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:) added 0.99% or 1.28 points to end at 131.06 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:) was up 0.91% or 0.49 points to 54.43 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were 3M Company (NYSE:), which fell 1.99% or 3.35 points to trade at 164.99 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:) declined 1.93% or 1.08 points to end at 54.78 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:) was down 1.82% or 2.55 points to 137.80.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:) which rose 14.20% to 207.58, Kraft Heinz Co (NASDAQ:) which was up 13.44% to settle at 32.33 and LKQ Corporation (NASDAQ:) which gained 7.97% to close at 33.99.

The worst performers were Western Digital Corporation (NASDAQ:) which was down 16.91% to 51.65 in late trade, Xylem Inc (NYSE:) which lost 8.77% to settle at 76.69 and Lincoln National Corporation (NYSE:) which was down 8.36% to 56.48 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Agile Thrpe (NASDAQ:) which rose 223.80% to 1.20, Eloxx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 80.18% to settle at 6.090 and Arbutus Biopharma Corp (NASDAQ:) which gained 59.62% to close at 1.420.

The worst performers were Cocrystal Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 35.53% to 0.7350 in late trade, Sunworks Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 33.65% to settle at 2.0900 and Merit Medical Systems Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 29.05% to 20.66 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1791 to 1095 and 84 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1666 fell and 976 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged.

Shares in LKQ Corporation (NASDAQ:) rose to 52-week highs; up 7.97% or 2.51 to 33.99. Shares in Cocrystal Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:) fell to 52-week lows; losing 35.53% or 0.4050 to 0.7350. Shares in Merit Medical Systems Inc (NASDAQ:) fell to 3-years lows; losing 29.05% or 8.46 to 20.66.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 7.22% to 13.22.

Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.24% or 18.60 to $1515.30 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 1.69% or 0.93 to hit $54.13 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.07% or 0.04 to trade at $59.47 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.02% to 1.1152, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 108.05.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.34% at 97.110.
