German jobless claims rose by more than expected in October, providing fresh evidence that the country’s economic slowdown is taking its toll on the labor market.

Jobless claims rose by 6,000 in October, after a revised fall of 9,000 in September, the Federal Employment Agency said Wednesday. The first reading for September showed a fall of 10,000.

Economists in The Wall Street Journal’s survey forecast an increase of 3,000 in jobless claims in October.

The adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.0%.

The number of registered job vacancies stood at 765,000, down 60,000 on the year, the agency said.
