Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said Wednesday that it is in talks that could lead to a merger with a rival.
“There are ongoing discussions aimed at creating one of the world’s leading mobility groups,” Fiat Chrysler FCA, +0.00% said in a short statement.
The statement comes after The Wall Street Journal reported TuesdayFiat Chrysler in Talks With Peugeot On Possible Combination that Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA Group UG, +0.24% of France are in talks over a potential combination that could create the fourth-largest car maker by volume.
Fiat Chrysler didn’t give any further details.
